The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
