Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, States New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - football oversight chief David Kogan

Sheffield Wednesday's current difficulties constitute a "major concern" and the new football authority is aiming to acquire authority to examine team situations in comparable cases, its new chair the official has declared.

In a wide-ranging interview, Kogan, who was recently selected, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

Kogan met with four fan organizations connected to the football team recently.

The football club have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club failing to pay players on time on multiple instances, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," the regulator explained.

"Wednesday stands as one of the great brands for English football and in recent days we have met fan representatives.

"We are seeking authority... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they need to be investigated and dealt with."

Economic Challenges and Ownership Situation

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be willing to sell up at the stadium, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with interested parties.

Missed wage deadlines on time in spring months resulted in restrictions being imposed by the football authorities in summer, stopping Wednesday from completing any transfers or loans for the subsequent signing windows, although that restriction was lifted in August.

Authority's Position

The regulator explained: "The position was created for the supporters of Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a community organization that has existed throughout their lifetimes in many cases.

"I fully appreciate Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for all the clubs that in modern times have encountered failure, or approached financial ruin, for reasons that have nothing to do with the supporters."

Inquired if the regulator could force an owner to sell a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the regulator answered: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we gather the evidence and understand the situation, we will."

But Kogan stressed that forcing owners to sell clubs would be considered the final option and the oversight body would choose to collaborate with owners.

"Our least desirable course of action is start getting involved with an specific team, an specific proprietor, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that owner to try and resolve the problems affecting the organization and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"However, realistically, when you look back over the history of the sport, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been certain proprietors, not many, but particular people who have shown negligence in the approach they have taken toward their organizations and finally refuse to accept accountability for the coming years."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The chairman convened with representatives from 110 clubs to lay out the remit of the oversight body this week and insisted it was a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"This position carries substantial significance, because if we get it wrong, if the sport makes errors, the extraordinary progress that's been made might evaporate swiftly," the chairman stated.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the context of the English game is a major achievement - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money entering the sport and has been channeled for the past two decades, because there's no guarantee it will continue to come into football, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on risk and of course, of the next two or three years."

Premier League Concerns

Top flight officials resisted the establishment of an oversight body because of fears of a negative impact on the elite division's competitive balance, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the success and growth as an financial organization of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the concern of undermining the top flight as an elite competition of England. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, indeed, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Political Connections

The regulator remains subject to a "full inquiry" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he disclosed making donations to the opposition group in the past.

The 68-year-old contributed funds to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the government leader.

"I've been completely open about my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," Kogan said.

"I am presently disconnected from any form of political activity."
