Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
